The High Court has approved its first application to transfer a case to the ‘shorter trials scheme’. Under this scheme, trials are limited to four days, and summary costs instead of costs budgeting. One of the benefits of this scheme, it is hoped, is that it will improve access to justice. However, this is the first case that has been transferred to the scheme after the litigation began proceedings in the standard way. The result of this may be that we now see an increasing number of cases which have begun litigating in the traditional manner being transferred to the shorter trials scheme.
