Senior judges have voiced concerns over the costs of bringing claims in conjunction with cuts to legal aid, which has rendered ‘our system of justice unaffordable to most’. Technological investment is one proposed solution to ease the financial strain of civil litigation: Lord Briggs’ report recommended setting up an online court for small claims; and it is suggested that court IT systems need completely updated to improve efficiency. While this may reduce costs in the long term, privatised funding provides a more immediate solution for claimants by bridging the gap left by rising costs and reductions in governmental financial assistance.
