James is the Head of International Arbitration at Augusta the UK’s largest Litigation Funder by case volume. Before joining, James was a partner with the international law firm Gowling WLG (previously Wragge Lawrence Graham) where he headed the Middle East Arbitration and Construction Disputes practice, having started the Lawrence Graham office in Dubai in 2007.
During his time in Dubai James was consistently ranked by the Chambers Global Directory as one of the UAE’s leading construction disputes lawyers and was involved with some of the region’s largest projects, with particular experience of disputes on major infrastructure works, including airports, roads and public utilities.
James trained and qualified with Slaughter and May in London. Before moving to Dubai with Lawrence Graham in 2007, his practice had a strong focus on construction disputes in SE Asia, in particular, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Vietnam.
While in Dubai James took a keen interest in arbitration and litigation finance, in particular in the Middle East and Turkey. In 2019 he co-authored (with his team in Dubai) the inaugural UAE chapter in the Law Business Research Guide to Litigation Funding, a global review across 22 jurisdictions of the law and practice of third-party funding.
James has also acted for funders looking to invest in high-value disputes in the Middle East and has been a prominent presenter on the topic of dispute funding, including with the Society of Construction Law (Gulf) (of which he was Vice-Chairman) in a joint presentation with Augusta.
James has an MA in Jurisprudence from the University of Oxford.
